Compact SUVs are the preferred option for more and more buyers. In the competitive segment, a surprise has appeared in recent years that have performed really well on a commercial level, the CupraFormentor. In the coming months another will arrive that points in the same direction, the Toyota Corolla Cross. Which of the two is more recommended?
Design
The key here is to point out the very different approaches the two models take. Although these are quite versatile and spacious SUVs, the truth is that on an aesthetic level, the one that reflects this reality is the Toyota, while the design of the Cupra is much sportier.
In fact, the Formentor would have as a more direct rival, from an aesthetic point of view, the Toyota C-HR.
Thus, the Spaniard presents more aggressive features, and overall his silhouette is much more athletic and dynamic. The Japanese present a much more neutral image, with rounded shapes and a set that, from the outside, seems more practical.
Measures
They are quite similar models, although their proportions change due to the sportier focus of the Cupra.
The Formentor has a length of 4,450 mm, a width of 1,839 mm, and a height of 1,511 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,680 mm. The Corolla, meanwhile, measures 4,460 mm long, 1,825 mm wide, and 1,620 mm high.
It is the Japanese that wins in terms of boot capacity, as it offers 487 liters which put it above the 420 liters of its rival.
Engines
The engines with which the Corolla Cross will be marketed in Spain have not yet been specified, but it would be logical for it to use options similar to those known in similar markets.
Thus, the logical thing would be that it is sold with two different versions of its self-recharging hybrid system, one with 140 CV and one with 199 CV, being able to choose between 4x2 or integral traction, in the second case. In this way, it would always have the DGT ECO label.
Next to it, the Formentor has a more varied and wide range. To begin with, it is available with a 150 hp 2.0 diesel engine, both with manual and automatic DSG transmission. Next to it, it offers gasoline with the same power and with the same transmission options.
Above are three other gasoline alternatives, all based on the 2.0 TSI block, with powers of 190, 245, and 310 hp. The VZ5 crowns the range, which mounts a 390 CV 2.5 TSI gasoline engine.
In addition, it also has two plug-in hybrid versions that enjoy the ZERO label, an access one with 204 CV of power and a superior one that reaches up to 245 CV.
Price
In this factor again, the fact that the Toyota Corolla Cross is not yet available in Spain is key. Its launch is scheduled for after the summer and, until then, we can only buy with known rates, such as the 37,900 euros from which it is available on the Italian market.
If so, it would start a little higher than the CupraFormentor, which starts at 34,150 euros, although the Spanish one, in its access version, does not have the DGT ECO label, although it is slightly more powerful than the Japanese one.
