Last year 79.4 million vehicles were sold worldwide. But there is a brand that stands out above all, placing 4 of its models in the top 10. Do you want to know what brand it is and what was the preferred car?
According to data from JATO Dynamics, in 2022 79.4 million new vehicles were sold worldwide, 2% less than the 80.7 million units registered in 2021. And while North America, Europe, and China lowered their Figures compared to the previous year, other emerging markets such as India, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa accounted for 24% of the global volume and offset the falls observed in those markets.
TOYOTA, THE SELLING BRAND IN THE WORLD
13 of every 100 new passenger cars sold in the world were Toyota. The Japanese manufacturer increased its global market share by 0.3 points thanks to good results in China, now the largest market ahead of the United States and Japan. In addition, up to five of the ten best-selling models in the world in 2022 sported the Toyota logo: the RAV4 the first, followed by the Corolla in second position, the Camry and the Hilux, fifth and sixth respectively, and the Corolla Cross in eighth. position. Success without a doubt for the Japanese manufacturer.
As of 2021, the Volkswagen Group had to settle for second place behind Toyota. In China, the manufacturer's second largest market, sales fell 6% as a result of increased local competition, yet it remained the leading manufacturer in both China and Europe.
The Hyundai-Kia pairing ranked third as a result of its strong position in markets such as Korea, India, North America, and Europe. Unlike its rivals in Europe and the US, Hyundai-Kia has a relatively wide sales spread, with 71% of global sales in 4 regions. In fourth place, Stellantis posted a total volume of 5.8 million units, down 10%. In Europe, its sales fell by 14% with problems in the supply chain that affected the availability of vehicles. Despite this, Stellantis was the best-selling manufacturer in Latin America. General Motors sold 4.6 million units to close out the top 5, with Chevrolet accounting for 62% of its total.
In 2022, the manufacturer that grew the most was BYD. This Chinese brand gained 1.5 points of market share thanks to its strong offer in all the main segments and its competitive range of electric vehicles. BYD followed Tesla as the world's second best-selling EV maker, with volume increasing 184% to more than 911,000 units by 2022.
TESLA, AMONG THE BEST-SELLING MODELS
Tesla placed 2 of its 4 models available in 2022 in the top 10 of the ranking. According to JATO data for a total of 53 markets, the Tesla Model Y was the third best-selling model in the world in 2022, behind only Toyota's RAV4 and Corolla.
Muñoz continued: “It is a historic moment to see a pure electric vehicle not only so close to the top position but how this relatively new brand is making it so far up the world rankings, particularly given that they are not the most affordable vehicles.”
Further down, the Tesla Model 3 ranked tenth; however, it lost 1 position compared to 2021. Ford, Nissan, and Honda each placed one model in the top ten of the ranking.
ELECTRIC VEHICLES CONTINUE THEIR RISE
In 2022, a total of 7.37 million battery electric vehicles were sold, 2.9 million more than in 2021 or, what is the same, an increase of 66 percent compared to that year.
On the other hand, BEV's global market share jumped from 5.5% in 2021 to 9.3% last year. And regionally, only China and Europe had double-digit market shares with 15.6% and 12.2% respectively.
For Felipe Muñoz, JATO global analyst, “It seems that the rise of electric vehicles will continue. Governments around the world continue to offer generous incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, encouraging consumers to switch from internal combustion vehicles, while average prices have fallen thanks to the introduction of more affordable models by manufacturers ”.
Norway continued to lead the way in the adoption of electric vehicles globally. Last year, 71% of the cars registered in this country were electric with a battery; however, it was Hong Kong that registered the largest increase in market share, from 24.4% in 2021 to 53.1% last year.
Meanwhile, in China, electric vehicles represent 53% of global sales, a success that is explained by the fact that delivery times for these are shorter than for models with gasoline or diesel engines, in addition to an offer that does not stop growing: by 2022, 15 new brands were launched in China.
