It is true that, until last February, we have witnessed the anomaly of seeing the price of diesel more expensive than that of gasoline and that has been able to put more than one back before buying a diesel car. But we will hardly see that situation again.
Logically, not all are advantages for the diesel car: it is not the best option if you are going to drive preferably in the city since this type of driving is not compatible with all the anti-pollution technology that modern models have.
But it is for those who do many kilometers a year and cannot access a hybrid vehicle, for example. In addition, these vehicles continue to boast of having the lowest price per kilometer.
Diesel car situation today
In a diesel engine, combustion is done by compression, unlike in a gasoline engine, where the spark plug generates the spark necessary for combustion. This makes the diesel engine noisier and less refined than a gasoline one.
In addition, due to the characteristics of diesel, diesel cars are more polluting than gasoline cars. However, for more than 20 years, the industry has been correcting this by incorporating numerous devices to reduce polluting gases, such as the EGR valve, the particulate filter, or, more recently, the SCR catalyst with AdBlue injection.
From being the most appreciated to being reviled. This has been the evolution of diesel cars from the mid-90s to today, although there are still many users interested in this type of mechanics, as we have pointed out at the beginning.
The demand for diesel has fallen dramatically in recent years. The data does not lie and, in 2022, the share of diesel cars represented 17.16%, with a total of 139,599 units sold. That represents a drop of 18.44% compared to 2021. In contrast, the market share for hybrid cars was more than 25% in 2022.
The reasons are more than well known: on the one hand, the criticisms based on environmental criteria from the political authorities, above all, as a result of the Volkswagen scandal in 2015; on the other, the rise of electrified mechanics.
To this, we must add that the different authorities in Europe, whether municipal, regional, or national, have announced plans to restrict the use of diesel cars in the medium term, which has made many drivers wonder whether or not it is worth buying one.
These messages have crystallized in measures such as the implementation of Low Emission Zones (ZBE) in all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, which veto access to the most polluting vehicles, that is, those that do not enter the environmental classification. established by the DGT labels.
However, it is to be expected that, in the coming years, the municipalities (which are in charge of managing ZBEs) will toughen the restrictions on private traffic, especially harming diesel.

- Opel Corsa 1.5 D 100 CV: average consumption of 4.2 liters/100 km.
Diesel cars offer a number of advantages over their gasoline, hybrid, or electric counterparts. The most obvious is consumption: diesel vehicles use less fuel.
This makes them very appropriate vehicles for those who often travel long distances because the cost per kilometer is much cheaper. In addition, the liter of diesel is cheaper than gasoline, so filling a diesel tank is more profitable.
Another advantage, related to the above, is that diesel cars have greater autonomy. It is easy to find models on the market that far exceed a thousand kilometers of autonomy, which makes them ideal vehicles for traveling.
Autonomy is the main asset of the diesel car compared to the electric one, in addition to the price, much cheaper too. Regarding the price, it must be added that diesel cars are more expensive than an equivalent gasoline one, they cost more or less the same as a hybrid (HEV) and are cheaper than a plug-in hybrid (PHEV).
