The cheapest Volvo arrives: A 272 hp electric SUV for 2,300 euros less than the hybrid XC40

Volvo warned a few weeks ago that its new access model would have a very competitive price. Less than a month later, we already know what the new Volvo EX30 looks like and what it will cost.

The little brother of the Volvo XC40 is fully electric, shares the platform and technology with the Smart #1, and can now be ordered at dealers throughout Europe. In Spain, it is for sale for 36,770 euros.

Three versions and Android Automotive

Volvo already has its cheap electric car. It is called Volvo EX30 and it is a 4.23-meter-long urban SUV that becomes the access model for the Swedish brand. It shares the SEA-E (Sustainable Experience Architecture-Entry) platform with its Geely cousins, the Smart #1 and Zeekr X, and is already available in Europe.

According to Volvo, its starting price is 36,770 euros, so it will be cheaper than the electric SUV B of the Stellantis Group and will be only one step above the price of the MG4 Electric and BYD Dolphin, both Available from about 30,000 euros.

The access variant has a 272 CV electric motor and the most capable (Twin Motor) has two electric motors, one for each axis, which develop a maximum combined power of 428 CV.

This latest version makes the EX30 the fastest accelerating Volvo and allows it to complete 0 to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds. It is not that the basic version is slow either because it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds.

There are also two battery options: standard and extended. The standard range Volvo EX30 (Single Motor) uses a 49 kWh net capacity LFP (litho-fluorophosphate) “battery” that allows it to travel up to 344 km between charges. It is only available in combination with the 228 hp engine.

The same mechanics can be combined with the extended range battery (Single Motor Extended Range), which is of the NCM (nickel, cobalt, and manganese) type, has a net capacity of 64 kWh, and allows the 272 CV Volvo EX30 to offer a range of up to 480 km. It is the same battery that uses the 428 CV variant, which approves up to 460 km of autonomy.

When it comes to charging, the EX30 with standard autonomy can do it at a maximum power of 134 kW and the Twin Motor can do it at a power of up to 153 kW, so it only needs 25 minutes to charge the battery from 10% to 80 % of its capacity.

As for the finishes, there are three available: Core, Plus, and Ultra. The first already comes standard with adaptive cruise control, Android Auto, rear-end collision warning, front and rear crossing alert with automatic brake, rear parking sensors, rear camera, front camera, LED headlights, and a 12-inch central touch screen. 3 inches, among other things.

It is equipment similar to that of the Volvo XC40, which in its basic 129 CV gasoline micro-hybrid version and with the Essential finish has a starting price of 39,100 euros.
