Wild,
untamed, and even dangerous, this is how the only road-approved TVR Cerbera
Speed 12 in the world was defined by its creator. So much so that its
production was canceled. Well, that one unit has just been sold at the blow of
a sledgehammer.
And
given the substance of this bestial and revered unicorn, in addition to its
exclusivity, the price they have paid for it almost seems little. Be that as it
may, Silverstone Auctions auctioned it last weekend and its new owner will have
to tame its more than 800 CV for 1,000 kg of weight if it wants to circulate at
its controls.
An
untamed beast that opens a garage
Founded
in the 1940s as Trevcar Motors, TVR specialized in two-seater and lightweight
hypercars, although in general, its stronghold has been the world of
competition. And among the models that saw the light of day within this British
firm, led by the engineer and pilot Peter Wheeler, perhaps the most special was
what was called internally 'project 7/12'.
Wheeler's
goal was to create a beast capable of outperforming the great McLaren F1 GTR.
Capital task. We are therefore talking about a competition model that wanted to
reach the top. After years of development, the first prototype of it was
presented at the 1996 Birmingham Motor Show. And many fell in love.
Born as
TVR Speed 12 and later evolved as TVR Cerbera Speed 12 (suitable for the GT2
category), we are talking about a racing car. But the brand also developed
street versions and even opened reservations to get their services. The problem
is that they never saw the light.
Canceled
for being a danger on wheels. And it is that the good old Wheeler, with the prototypes
of the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 street cars almost ready, decided to take a unit
home. When he returned the next day he branded it as ungovernable and decided
to cancel the project, returning the money contributed in the reserves to those
interested. That unit is the one that just went up for auction.
Beyond
its spectacular stamp, its aerodynamic shapes, or its cabin focused on pure
driving, the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 moves thanks to a 7.7-liter V12 engine.
During these years it has been receiving improvements and this brutal heart has
ended up signing 850 CVs. It has also been lightening and adjusting, stopping
the scale at 1,100 kg. And it has passed through several hands until it reached
its new and current owner.
Almost
700,000 euros. It was obvious that the TVR Cerbera Speed 12 was going to find
plenty of boyfriends at the auction held by Silverstone Auctions. And it is not
that the amount they have paid for it has been precisely low: the winning bid
has taken it for 601,500 pounds sterling, which at the current exchange rate is
about 691,491 euros.
We are talking
about a whole unicorn on wheels, perhaps one of the most special ever
conceived, so the amount paid almost seems small. Although, on the other hand,
its new owner must be in good hands if he wants to enjoy it without any danger.
