The Vision One-Eleven: Mercedes' Answer to the Electric Sports Car Market

In the same color as the experimental C111 presented in the 1960s, the brand with the star has revealed a more modern version of that concept car. The new Mercedes Vision One-Eleven is a design study that marks the future of its great sports cars, both inside and out. A preview of the new solutions that AMG will implement in their electric future.

Between the decades of the 60s and 70s of the last century, Mercedes presented to the general public of the time two concept cars that marked a true milestone. The firm of the star has recovered the spirit of the C111 and C111 II in a new concept car with a great retro style adapted to the most modern times and with cutting-edge technology. The Mercedes Vision One-Eleven is the latest great novelty from the manufacturer, in which they have implanted special details of some record-breaking creations.

The original C111, equipped with a Wankel-type rotary engine developed by Mercedes, managed to reach a record top speed at the Italian Nardo circuit, now owned by Porsche, with a whopping 403.76 km/h. A few months earlier, one of the units of this experimental demonstrator equipped with a diesel engine was capable of reaching 316 km/h, although with an expense almost at the level of a Bugatti.

The Mercedes Vision One-Eleven will inspire the future sports of AMG

The new Vision One-Eleven is very different in technical concept and, for now, no performance details are known, but it is a demonstrator of advanced AMG technology that will be equipped in its high-performance electric future. One of the keys to achieving this lies in its aerodynamic bodywork, whose highest point from floor to ceiling measures just 1.17 meters, an idea of air penetration and low resistance.

The Mercedes Vision One-Eleven has a long bonnet in which its two round headlights equipped with LED pixel lighting technology stand out on a front panel that lights up as needed, including warning pedestrians. Fitted on large alloy wheels with a single central locking nut and with a very striking design, they are part of the aerodynamic work that can be seen on the bodywork, with a large spoiler at the front and some side skirts that serve to drive the rear airflow.

The AMG revolution, electric sports cars with axial motors

But best of all, it is its key in future electric sports cars: the Mercedes Vision One-Eleven is equipped with new axial-flow electric motors developed together with YASA, a specialist company that has been part of the star conglomerate since 2021. The AMG electrics will abandon the radial flow motors currently used in the industry, betting on smaller ones that, with almost the same diameter as the rotors, can offer greater power and torque.

Batteries even abandon the usual flat concept to become cylindrical, more compact by having these electric motors whose electrical energy flows perpendicular to the axis of rotation, and liquid-cooled. Mercedes has not given more details of the performance, but knowing it will be a real revolution, and well before the next decade.
