The Volkswagen Amarok Returns: Here's What You Need to Know

Volkswagen repeats. Twelve years after the launch of the first Volkswagen Amarok and with more than 830,000 units sold, the German brand launches the second generation of its off-road pick-up.

It arrives in Spain with three diesel engines, including a 3.0-liter six-cylinder. All of them are combined with a four-door double cab and an all-wheel drive system.

Three options

The Volkswagen Amarok is back. The second generation of the German pick-up shares the platform and engines with the Ford Ranger, although it took a little longer to land in Spain and it does so with a less wide range.

While the Ford Ranger is available with three bodies (two-door Super Cab, two-door Single Cab, and four-door Double Cab), the Volkswagen Amarok comes only with a double cab and four doors.

This second installment of the Amarok measures 5.35 meters long, 1.91 meters wide, and 1.87 meters high. Its wheelbase is 3.27 meters and promises to improve the off-road capabilities of the previous model.

The fording depth goes from 500 mm of its predecessor to 800 mm, while the entry angle of the bodywork is 30º in front, the exit angle is 23º and the ventral angle is 20º. In addition, the 4x4 traction system has a rear differential lock as standard in the access variant and is optional in the other two available versions.

The entry Volkswagen Amarok is called simply Amarok and has a 170 hp 2.0 TDI engine that is linked to a six-speed manual gearbox. Above is the Amarok Style, also with a 2.0 TDI turbodiesel engine and manual transmission, but with 215 hp (the one used by the previous Ford Ranger Raptor).

The top-of-the-range option is the Amarok Aventura, which uses a 241 hp 3.0 TDI V6 engine, always associated with a 10-speed automatic gearbox. In all cases, the turbodiesel engines are associated with a 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

The starting price of the new Volkswagen Amarok is 49,010 euros, VAT included, for the 170 hpAmarok variants. The 215 CV Amarok Style is on sale for 67,130 euros and the 241 CV Amarok Aventura starts at 72,910 euros.

A very familiar rival

If we compare it with its American relative, the basic Ford Ranger with the same 2.0 diesel engine as the access Volkswagen Amarok, 4x4 traction, and a six-speed manual transmission, is on sale for 44,306 euros.

One step higher is the 205-hp 2.0 EcoBlue variant with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which starts at 55,936 euros with VAT, while the 240-hp Ranger V6 3.0 diesel and 10-speed automatic transmission starts from 59,436 euros with VAT. Always with double cabin.

For its part, the wild Ford Ranger Raptor with a 3.0-liter V6 EcoBoost gasoline engine and 292 hp are for sale for 76,424 euros with VAT and a simply brutal set-up.
