The Toyota Corolla is the best-selling car in history, a model that has been sold for decades and that in its history has had variants that are really valued (Initial D, it's your fault). However, no one will be surprised by the fact that the sportiest version of the model that has ever existed is quite recent.
And it is that you only have to go back a year to find it. Shortly after the Toyota GR Yaris won the hearts of half the world, Toyota announced that the GR family was expanding, this time with its older brother, a move that made fans have sparkles in their eyes... only to abruptly turn them off when it was confirmed that it would not reach Europe.
It was a matter of fairness, we suppose because if the little boy was for the Old Continent, the Toyota GR Corolla would only be for North America. "Garlic and water", which is often said, but we admire from a distance the sportiest Toyota Corolla in history, which a priori we will never be able to put down.
From the first glance, it is obvious, since he wears a muscular suit that partly follows the lines established by the aforementioned Yaris.
The front bumper is completely new, with a huge honeycomb-pattern air intake that almost completely covers it. Cooling ducts guide air through the wheels. It wears 18-inch wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires. Its weight is 1,474 kilos.
Its soul is a 1.6 turbo three-cylinder engine that develops 304 HP of power and 370 Nm of maximum torque, associated with a six-speed manual gearbox and an all-wheel drive system that distributes power in three different proportions depending on the mode chosen: 60:40, 50:50 and 30:70.
Plus, it can be sweetened up even more with the optional Circuit Edition package. Its main trinkets are the two self-locking differentials, front and rear; and the carbon fiber roof.
An extra twist
As if the GR Corolla was not enough, the Japanese brand saw fit to polish its formula a little more to, yes, yes, create the sportiest Toyota Corolla in history, the Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition.
Conceived as a special series of 200 examples exclusive to Japan, it was based on the Circuit Edition variant but added improvements to further sharpen the compact radical.
The first thing is that the engine has a small adjustment that increases its maximum torque to 400 Nm and this is also available between 3,250 and 4,600 rpm. In addition, the six-speed manual gearbox shortens its ratios to improve acceleration at the expense of top speed.
The icing on the cake is a slimming plan that eliminates the seats, power windows, and rear speakers; and both the motor and the rear wiper. In addition, it adds 18-inch forged aluminum wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. The result is a saving of 48 kilos to mark 1,445 kilos on the scale.
Finally, the aerodynamics of the model is also slightly different, since the format of the bumper and the air ducts vary, as well as the design of the spoiler.
