Volvo EX30: The new electric premium B-SUV from 36 thousand euros

After several advances in the form of video teasers and the occasional leak, the new Volvo EX30 is now official. In the Swedish house, they are convinced that with this new electric B-SUV, they will overtake their rivals. And when you read all the data that we are going to tell you, you still think like them. Especially since offering a starting price like the one they advertise is impossible for their Bavarian premium rivals. And not only that, but his technique is brutal...

As you well know, Volvo is betting heavily on electrification, and to achieve its objectives it has to democratize it. And the EX30 is proof that if things are done wisely they can be good for the sector and its customers. So if you want a premium SUV of contained size and electric you will not find a better option with an unbeatable product-price ratio. In addition, their quality and safety are at the highest level. Do not miss it.

The aesthetics of the new Volvo EX30 replicates that of the EX90 but before its rivals, it is more original...

As we have already indicated, the leaks and previews of the new EX30 have revealed its aesthetics ahead of time. And those responsible are aware of it but not for both reasons they were going to hide it. Even more so when the purchase of a new vehicle is based, in many cases, on its design. In this case, we are dealing with a mini EX90 in which, far from being a simple copy, it adapts a large part of its lines and, in addition, launches other elements of its own.

We have a wheelbase of 2.65 meters that supports a body that is 4.23 meters long by 1.84 meters wide and 1.56 meters high. On these dimensions, Volvo reinterprets its classic grill, which is now completely closed to favor aerodynamics. The Full LED optics give a twist to the "Hammer of Thor" type design because now they are more torn. As for the side, the waistline and the generous tires stand out…

In this area, we cannot ignore the break in the "C" pillar that combines the beltline of the door with the drop of the roof. In this way, the upper area of the rear LED optics is integrated into the upper part of the pillar in order to reduce the minimum space for the gate. This includes the main group that, unlike the EX90, forms two "C" in opposite directions. Finally, the Cross Country version adds off-road details and there are five shades to dress its bodywork...

Interior with a minimalist style that stands out for its technological load and ecology…

The interior of the new Volvo EX30 has also been advanced by the brand. Not clearly in terms of lines, but through teasers announcing that we were facing a very technological cabin of superb quality. In addition, for its preparation, they have used new recycled materials that replace the natural ones of yesteryear. Together, they make up four different environments that adapt to the tastes of the driver.

Regarding the design, Volvo's creative team has opted for extreme minimalism. The dashboard is made up of straight and simple lines that give prominence to the large central vertical touch screen that governs all the vehicle's systems. To bring it to life, it has the latest generation of Volvo's infotainment system that was born by Google. In addition, various functions such as driving aids are controlled from the steering wheel…

Behind the steering wheel is the new camera for the facial recognition system for the driver. In addition, it has a digital key through a mobile application and five modes of LED ambient lighting. The security part is high, but the EX30 brings several new features. First of all, the Park Pilot Assist system or the alert that warns in the presence of a cyclist or pedestrian when we are going to open the doors.

Its great asset is its wide and ambitious mechanical offer…

However, in addition to a demolition price to be a premium model, the great asset of the new Volvo EX30 is its mechanical offer. Initially, there are three versions, all-electric, with two batteries that adapt to practically all uses and customer needs. The Single Motor version with a rear engine and 200 kW (272 CV) of power and 343 Nm of torque opens the range. It is powered by a 49 kWh battery with up to 344 kilometers of autonomy.

The intermediate version is also a Single Motor with equal power and torque but with a more capable battery. It is called Extended Range and is of the NMC (nickel, cobalt, and manganese) type with a 64 kWh capacity for a range of up to 480 kilometers. In the first case, the AC load can be at 11 kW, and in the second at 22 kW. As for CC, the maximum is 134 kW to go from 10% to 80% of the load in approximately 25 minutes.

Crowning the range of the EX30 for power and performance is the Twin Motor Performance version. It is a dual motor and offers 428 CV of power with 543 Nm of maximum torque to all four wheels. It is powered by a 64 kWh capacity NMC-type battery for an estimated autonomy according to WLTP of up to 460 kilometers. Its charge can be in direct current up to 153 kWh and it goes from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in 3.6 seconds.

What is your price for Spain…? Will Generation Z be able to buy it…?

After reading this data, you still think that the new Volvo EX30 is out of reach for many customers. And although the access fee they ask for it is high for half of mortals, there are rivals from generalist firms that are worth much more. In fact, in Spain, it starts at 36,770 euros, which places it even below the new Peugeot e-2008 that was released a few weeks ago. If you want to compare here you have this summary table.

In terms of endowment, from the basic version Core offers premium technology and security. To highlight the Adaptive Cruise Control or the inclusion of the Google Assistant with Google Maps and Google Play Store for four years. The security section does not leave elements such as Reach Collision Warning. If we go up in range, the Plus level is enriched with Pilot Assist and if we go up to the Ultra finish, the Park Pilot Assist system or panoramic roof will not be missing.
