More efficient engines, improved equipment, a new and more advanced on-board digital ecosystem, greater interior space, or an improved chassis to find a new balance between driving pleasure and comfort have been the main points on which BMW has worked in the third generation of the X1, an SUV that will soon consolidate the entire range.
It was launched last year with a gasoline and a diesel engine. As of today, the customer can choose in the new BMW X1 2023 two diesel variants, as many gasoline ones, also a couple of plug-in hybrids, and, as a major novelty, a fully electric version based on fifth-generation eDrive technology. And soon there will also be sports-oriented versions, such as the BMW X1 M35i xDrive or the xDrive 23i, completing a final offer of new versions between 136 and 326 CV, C, ECO, and ZERO badges, front or all-wheel drive combined with different equipment lines. or customization packages to make a BMW X1 to suit you.
The new BMW X1 is bigger, has better aerodynamics, and is something more spacious
The new BMW X1 is significantly larger than its predecessor. It now has a length of 4,500 mm, 53 mm more than before, a width of 1,845 mm, 24 more, and its height has increased by 44 mm, now reaching a height of 1,642 mm. At the same time, the platform has also increased both in wheelbase and track width, clear signs that we are facing a completely new generation, more functional, more livable, and more efficient since one of the main changes of the renewed bodywork has been to design the front A-pillar in a slightly more inclined position to improve the drag coefficient and reduce noise from air friction at high speed. The most favorable Cx of the range is 0.26. On board, especially at high speeds, it can be seen that it is a quieter car than before, it is better insulated and sealed, avoiding the appearance of "hot spots" where annoying noises could be produced at high speed
The new BMW X1 has also adopted the design language of the brand's latest launches. The new front kidneys of the grill together with the newly designed headlights with LED technology as standard, or LED matrix function as an option, characterize the new front view of the youngest of the X Series. The new palette of exterior colors is made up of 12 shades. In addition to the base finish, equipped with standard 17-inch alloy wheels, the customer can opt for the xLine or M Sport lines, in this case with 18-inch alloy wheels and specific elements that provide more elegance or more sportiness.
BMW continues to offer features in the X1 that make it a truly practical and functional SUV. For example, the shapes of its body allow magnificent use of the interior in width and height, dimensions that have improved significantly in this new generation, thus offering greater interior relief when traveling in the rear seats. For its part, the new design of the driving position also provides a feeling of greater free space, spaciousness, and comfort. The BMW X1 continues to offer a sliding rear bench with up to 13 cm of longitudinal adjustment to configure the passenger compartment according to needs.
This optional element can be mounted separately in the combustion versions for a price of 473 euros, or within the Travel package and also includes tinted windows, a panoramic roof, or separation nets in the trunk. With the rear seats folded down, these divided into sections 40:20:40, the trunk reaches up to 1,600 liters of capacity. The iX1, the fully electric version, has a 490-litre boot capacity. The two plug-in hybrids offer a volume of 500 liters while the rest of the engines reach 540 liters of capacity.
BMW curved display and BMW ID8 Operating system: Probably the best multimedia system
The key
elements of the redesign of the cabin are found in the renewed dashboard, a new
digital system that includes the 10.25-inch instrument panel, and the 10.7-inch
multimedia equipment in a single high-resolution widescreen with a slightly
curved shape. The operations center is combined with a floating console
located between the front seats where we find the gear controls, access to the
driving modes, and other main functions, also being an area where objects can be
stored in the glove compartment or left deposited in the lower area.
BMW maintains the usual standards. It is a car that gives a high-quality sensation both for its settings and for the materials used.
It is a characteristic that also extends to the chassis, due to how well the suspensions isolate; and to the mechanical section since the vast majority of its engines transmit little noise to the interior and an almost zero level of vibrations. Only Diesel can make a perceptible noise in the passenger compartment... in exchange for being a marathon engine that stands out for its impressive punch, low consumption, or also being able to have all-wheel drive with this type of fuel.
The new clock panel has several very positive characteristics, something that also extends to the multimedia system: it has an impressive resolution, it has different configurations so that the driver can customize the information at will, giving priority to driving data, the navigation system, or driving aids. Its sharpness is extraordinary and it looks just as good at night or during the day, whether or not direct sunlight hits it.
BMW has eliminated the iDrive rotary control, something that many may miss because of its ease of controlling almost any function of the multimedia system without having to touch the screen. Now, it is mandatory to do so to access different menus or confirm certain functions through the touch screen. Although, BMW uses one of the most complete, easy, and intuitive systems to use as long as you take a minimum of time to review the different submenus and even configure quick access to the elements you use most frequently. Some of its most positive features are the order and speed of the software, something that, although it may seem so, is still not very common in equivalent systems from other rival models.
Highlights the fluidity when moving between screens or how well the voice command system works, perfectly interpreting colloquial language, something that helps enormously when it comes a time, for example, programming an address in the browser: one of the actions most frequently performed drivers and more attention is stolen from driving when it is done by entering the data “by hand”. In addition to direct commands, one of the greatest benefits of voice commands is that it also allows us to directly access specific menus, displaying all the possible parameters that could be controlled on the screen. For its part, the browser also optionally has augmented reality —Augmented View— offering information about the environment through a real image using the front camera and arrows that direct the driver in the right direction.
The new standard seats have a sporty cut and may be somewhat short on the bench or narrow in the support of the thighs and kidneys for certain drivers, although they ensure excellent support. These seats can be optionally chosen with perforated Sensatec upholstery and Vernasca leather. Optionally, you can opt for seats with a sportier cut, with electrical adjustment and massage function.
New driver assistants and some of the main optional equipment packs
BMW has
reinforced the equipment in all areas although, as is still customary, many of
the elements are included in packages that affect the personalization of the
design, comfort, active safety, or the chassis or interior functionality. Some
of the new standard elements are the cruise control with braking function and
the forward collision warning system —Collision Warning—, now capable of
detecting a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist when making a turn; also the parking
assistant —Parking Assistant— which includes the reversing camera and the
reversing assistant —Reversing Assistant—. These are, for their part, some of
the equipment packages available.

HYBRIDS….
All engines use a
seven-speed oil-bath dual-clutch automatic transmission. In a matter of months,
BMW will launch the two remaining engines to complete the range, offering from
that moment a total of 9 alternatives; one is the 218 hp xDrive23i and ECO
environmental label; the other is the sportiest version of the range, but not
more powerful, the M35i xDrive with 300 hp. The two Diesel available at the
moment are the sDrive18d and the xDrive 20D.

The difference in overall performance is that the 20d uses a microhybrid system through an electric unit that provides the heat engine with an additional 19 hp and 55 Nm, although in return the all-wheel drive makes it 115 kilos heavier than the sDrive18D. Although they are not as refined or silent engines as the equivalent gasoline engines, they are clearly preferable due to the punch they have and the ease of driving that the turbodiesel engines of this brand provide, characterized by their ability to turn well at high revs and need really little fuel. For those who do not use the car frequently in the city and do not use it on slippery roads or intend to drive on off-road tracks, the sDrive18 is probably the most successful version. It is, along with the sDrive18i, the lowest-priced version, it has an agile and forceful response and you can achieve truly ridiculous consumption on the highway.
