BYD Takes Center Stage: Top 5 Electric Cars Outselling Tesla

The automotive market for electric vehicles has a clear dominance, whether we talk about countries or brands. They are China and BYD, which strongly lead the sales ranking and relieve large manufacturers such as Tesla or Volkswagen to the background.

Electric cars continue to gain ground in the automotive market, and last May saw a significant milestone.

According to global sales data, registrations of pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars exceeded one million units, thus marking the fifth time in history that this number has been reached in a single month. In addition, there was an impressive 50% year-on-year increase.

More pure electric cars are sold

In terms of technology, pure electric cars led the ranking, representing more than 70% of electric vehicle sales, with a total of 720,000 units. This translates to a global market share of 11%. On the other hand, plug-in hybrids reached 330,000 units, which represents 5% of the sales quota.

If we analyze the accumulated data from January to May 2023, it can be seen that pure electric cars managed to reach an impressive figure of 3.26 million units, representing 10% of total sales in that period.

Plug-in hybrids, for their part, reached 1.3 million units, which is equivalent to 4% of the sales share. Together, these two technologies accumulated 14% of all car registrations, with an annual growth of 41%.

Best selling electric cars

When it comes to the best-selling models in May, the Tesla Model Y took the top spot with more than 90,000 registrations. What stands out, however, is the dominance of Chinese manufacturers on the list.

The BYD Qin Plus (with BEV and PHEV versions) ranked second with 42,895 units, followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 38,453 units. The BYD Song Plus family (BEV and PHEV) also had a remarkable performance with 38,056 units sold.

The most successful brands in the electric car market

When we look at sales by brand in May, we see BYD as the undisputed leader, with more than 228,000 units sold, significantly outpacing any other brand.

Even Tesla trailed nearly 100,000 units behind. Aión GAC, BMW, Volkswagen, SAIC-GM-Wuling, Mercedes-Benz, Auto Li, Volvo, and Changán complete the list of the top 10 brands in terms of electric car sales in May.

After the first five months of the year, BYD continues to maintain its position as the largest manufacturer of electric and plug-in hybrid cars, with more than 950,000 units sold and close to a 21% market share.

This is partly due to its expansion into the market with new models such as the Seagull, which has been launched at affordable prices and is expected to be a bestseller in the near future.

Tesla remains the only competitor capable of keeping up with BYD, with more than 670,000 units sold in the first five months of the year.

It is interesting to note that premium brands such as BMW have managed to maintain a relatively high position in the sales ranking, but it is likely that in the near future, they will be overtaken by Chinese manufacturers with cheaper models, such as Changán, GAC or one of the SAIC brands. , as is the case of MG.

The electric car market continues to evolve and grow, and Chinese manufacturers are playing a key role in this revolution. With a significant increase in sales and an increasingly diverse offer, electric cars are expected to continue to gain popularity in the coming months and years.
