This unique bicycle manufacturer uses bamboo wood to build its frames. However, this amazing material is not only used to create prototypes with no real use but also allows the creation of a complete range of medium and high-end electric bicycles.
It's hard for my Boo Atakora EP8 to go unnoticed, as its frame immediately catches the eye. Not surprisingly, it is built with bamboo cane in the brand's factory located in Kiel, Germany.
However, the raw material comes from much further away, specifically, Ghana, where my Boo has created a sustainable bamboo production program with which, in addition, it finances its own school in the African country.
In this project, 35 employees from the area take part, and are fairly paid for their work, says the brand.
How the bamboo frame of my Boo Atakora is made
Access to quality education in rural Ghana, the opportunity for a free and self-determined life, and the creation of well-paying jobs is not the only goal of my Boo.
So is creating quality bikes from a sustainable point of view, and the bamboo frame is the key.
First, the right bamboo is selected, which grows wild in Ghana. The bamboo is dried for several months to make it firm and resistant. Then the most aesthetic rods are selected for the construction of the frame.
The bamboo shafts for frame construction are then prepared using frame gauges, ensuring the correct geometry. The rods are fixed with resin and the joints of the frame are wrapped with resin-soaked sisal ropes to make it more stable. Sisal is made from the natural fibers of certain agaves.
The frame is then coarsely and finely ground to give it an attractive, uniform shape. Joints are polished to create a unique look. Extensive quality control is carried out to ensure that the frame meets the highest quality standards.
When the painting is finished, it is painted and additional tests are carried out. In Germany, they are checked manually before the final phase of assembling the bike.
This last step is done in the Kiel factory, where the bikes are assembled in a time that varies from four to 12 hours, depending on the individual configuration.
