NIO's semi-solid state battery of almost 1,000 km of autonomy is already a reality in China

The NIO ES6 is the electric vehicle chosen by the Chinese brand to mount for the first time the semi-solid state battery pack and 150 kWh capacity, which promises autonomy close to 1,000 kilometers.

Solid-state batteries are going to completely change the landscape of electric cars in the coming years. Surely until the end of this decade, they will not be mass-produced, first entering high-end vehicles and, once they become cheaper, more 'mundane' models.

However, in China, they are several steps ahead, with the semi-solid state battery manufactured by Beijing WeLion New Energy Technology already reaching the NIO ES6 this July. This is attested by the updated user manuals of the Chinese brand, which already include this new 150 kWh capacity battery.

These batteries are characterized by having a much higher energy density than current lithium-ion and liquid electrolyte batteries. This also translates into higher autonomy, faster and safer charges, a longer useful life, etc. The cost, on the other hand, is currently too high, reaching very high levels.

NIO ES6, new details of its semi-solid battery

To give you an idea, the president of NIO himself, Qin Lihong, has recognized that this battery has a cost as high as that of an NIO ET5 with its own battery: about 45,000 euros to change.

In order not to reach the market with an exorbitant price, the NIO ES6 will only come with the option of renting the batteries. Owners 'only' have to pay a monthly fee to cover the costs of said battery.

This semi-solid state 150 kWh battery pack weighs 575 kg, just 20 kg more than those already mounted in the 100 kWh Chinese electric SUV and which are of both CATL and CALB origin. The surprising thing is that the size they occupy is the same as the latter.

The energy density is also higher: 261 Wh/kg for the new WeLion battery compared to 180 Wh/kg for the 100 kWh batteries. In addition, it contains 384 cells, which is much higher than the 96 cells in CATL's 100 kWh battery pack (and 192 cells in CALB's).

In other words: the new solid-state battery has 50% more capacity, but just 3.6% more weight in the same size, 44.44% more energy density, and 300% more cells. In addition, the energy density of its cells is 360 Wh/kg, it has a nominal voltage of 3.31 V and a nominal capacity of 110 Ah.

Speaking in more common terms and that most know, the NIO ES6 with this new 150 kWh semi-solid state battery reaches 930 kilometers of autonomy on a single charge. The Chinese brand hopes to be able to exceed 1,000 km with this battery when it is installed in another type of more aerodynamic bodywork, such as that of sedans.

The delivery of the first batteries by WeLion was carried out by its executive vice president, Xiang Jin, in an act in which they were received by ZengShuxiang, senior vice president of NIO. There they also signed a contract to make an annual order, although the details of the latter are not known.
