The new
MG4 XPOWER is ready to lead the nascent era of electric GTIs. The new version
of the popular electric car from Morris Garage stands out for issues as
important as design, technology, and performance. MG's most powerful production
car is now on sale. We analyze the 5 keys to the new MG4 XPOWER.
The
2023 Goodwood Festival of Speed has been the setting chosen by Morris Garage to
present its most powerful production car to society. The new MG4 XPOWER has
burst onto the scene, capturing the attention of the curious followers of
the brand. MG's first electric compact continues to expand its range with new
and interesting versions. The XPOWER model is called to crown the offer in
terms of performance and exclusivity.
Morris
Garage describes the new MG4 XPOWER as the world's first electric GTI. It is a
variant with a sporty approach that stands out for its design, its
technological equipment, and, logically, its benefits. In this article, we
will review the 5 keys to the new MG4 XPOWER to quickly discover the main
features of a sports (and electric) compact that we cannot ignore.
1.
Design
First
of all, we must mention the most obvious, the exterior design. It is a quickly
recognizable model that clearly differs from the other versions that make up
the MG4 Electric range. It sports a whole series of characteristic features
with which to bring out all its character, and this is very important,
without renouncing the original essence of the model.
It is
fitted with exclusive 18-inch wheels and among the color options for the body, there is a new shade of green called Hunter Green. The front spoiler, the side
skirts, and the rear diffuser are finished in silver. In addition, the brake
calipers have been painted orange to create a very interesting contrast.
2.
Specific tuning
Beyond
a sporty focus design, the MG engineering team has focused on tuning. The
XPOWER version brings with it a specific "setup" that translates
into a notable improvement in behavior in sporty and dynamic driving. In the
spotlight are the suspension system and the steering system.
To
reduce pitching at high acceleration, the "damping force" of the
damping has been readjusted to 10% - 30% (front axle and rear axle). Suspension
hardness has also been increased by 25% on the front axle and 10% on the rear
axle. In addition, and as if that were not enough, this version presents a more
direct and precise specific direction.
3. Four-wheel drive
The
electric powertrain of the new MG4 XPOWER features a four-wheel drive
(non-permanent) configuration. A drive system that combines with the
Intelligent Motor Control Unit (IMCU) and One-Way Clutch (OWC) systems to
achieve optimal power distribution and a quiet shift from rear-wheel drive to
all-wheel drive configuration and vice versa.
OWC
technology makes it possible for the four-wheel drive system to come into
operation in just 200 milliseconds. Therefore, and as specified by the brand
itself, it is faster than an electronic clutch.
4.
Autonomy
The
"heart" of the new MG4 XPOWER is a 64 kWh battery. The energy stored
in the battery is mainly used to power two electric motors, one per axle. The
front engine puts out a power of 150 kW (204 hp). As for the rear engine, it
reaches 170 kW (231 hp). The total power is 320 kW (435 hp).
Thanks
to this engine, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The
autonomy of the MG4 XPOWER reaches 385 kilometers according to the WLTP cycle.
5.
Price
Last
but not least, we must talk about prices. The new MG4 XPOWER is already on sale
in Spain. As you might expect, being the top-of-the-range version of the MG4
Electric, it is the most expensive option. The starting price is €42,190. A
figure to which, depending on the market, certain aids and/or incentives may be
applied to the purchase of electric cars.
In the
absence of direct rivals, the Volkswagen Golf GTI is positioned as one of the
main competitors for the new MG model. And interestingly, despite being
electric, the new MG4 XPOWER is cheaper and more powerful.
