The first units of the INEOS Grenadier began to be delivered to customers a few months ago. But the production is going at a slow pace and many have been waiting for a year to release their British SUV.
That has caused speculation to knock on the doors of INEOS. There are units of the Grenadier that are being sold on the used market for much more than they cost new. It is what there is if someone wants to release a Grenadier now.
There are INEOS Grenadier announced for almost 200,000 euros
Speculation is the order of the day in many sectors and the automobile sector is no exception. It occurs at all levels: with classics, with general utility and compact cars, with hypercars, and with newcomers, such as the INEOS Grenadier.
The British SUV went on sale in the UK a few months ago and its first deliveries took place a few weeks ago, but it is arriving slowly.
Meanwhile, the demand does not stop growing, after all, it is one of the most interesting SUVs on the market. Partly because it's the true spiritual successor to the original Land Rover Defender, but also because it's one of the last true SUVs left for sale.
Another factor that explains the good reception that the first car of this new brand is having is its price. When the brand began accepting orders, in the spring of 2022, it started at 62,590 euros in Spain and its top-of-the-range version reached up to 79,890 euros.
Since then, INEOS has adjusted its price. In other words, it's gone up in price, as every car has, but it's still very competitive when compared to other genuine SUVs like the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, or Mercedes-Benz G-Class.
Aware of its potential, INEOS is expanding all over the world, but it is having the best reception in its local market, the British. There are many drivers there who miss being able to buy a car like the original Defender that allows them to move and work on any terrain. That is why the Grenadier is selling very well.
But we must not forget that INEOS is a new manufacturer and, for the moment, it is taking more time than expected to respond to the demand for the Grenadier. That has caused inflation to also come into play with this car.
The British media Autocar has interviewed one of the people who commissioned the INEOS Grenadier a long time ago, specifically in August 2022, and has not yet been able to release her car. His name is Eric McDonald and he says that, despite increasing the price of the SUV since then, INEOS has respected the price for which the first customers bought it, even though their car has not yet been delivered.
Instead, there are some buyers who are taking advantage of the situation to sell the Grenadier for a much higher price than it originally cost. They are even more expensive than those ordered now. The explanation is very simple: pure speculation. If you want to already have an INEOS Grenadier you have to pay more for it.
This is typical with limited edition supercars. There are dealers who buy one or more units to sell them at a much higher price. Normally, these units change owners before they leave the assembly line, but it is the only way some people have access to these cars.
The INEOS Grenadier is not a limited edition, but it has aroused so much expectation and its production is so slow that it is generating these things. As Autocar points out, near where McDonald lives there is a buy-sell dealership that has advertised an INEOS Grenadier Fieldmaster with 200 miles (about 320 kilometers) for 77,995 pounds (around 90,000 euros to change).
If bought new in the UK, that same car costs £76,000. As Autocar indicates, the unit being sold in that sale was ordered months ago, when it cost around £10,000 less new.
Outside the United Kingdom, the prices that some INEOS Grenadiers have at used dealers are even more striking. In Madrid, there is another that has not been released (there are no photos in the ad) with a price of 86,462 euros.
In Austria, there is one for sale with 9 kilometers for 111,043 euros. In the Netherlands, one with 5,983 kilometers is advertised for 167,945 euros, and in the same country, there is another with 15 kilometers that is sold for 175,579 euros. And they are not the only ones that cost more than 100,000 euros. What's more, in the Netherlands there is another that costs 195,450 euros.
INEOS is aware of what is happening and, like many other brands, wants to put an end to speculation, at least with its cars. Autocar has spoken with a person in charge of the firm and has indicated to the English media that they are trying to solve this matter.
“We have clauses in our contracts for sales agents and clients that are clear in terms of orders and subsequent sales, whether it is done by a company or a person. Our dealers have canceled several orders where it was clear the buyer's intent was to resell their Grenadier."
This is
not the first time this has happened. Some brands stipulate by contract that
their cars cannot be sold in a certain period of time to avoid being bought by
speculators. What is striking is that he is passing with an SUV. There is no
doubt that there is still interest in these types of vehicles.
