An Indepth Look at the Safety Features of the Seat Ateca 10 TSI

The Seat Ateca has become what in the fashion world is called a 'wardrobe basic'. And more in this access version that shines in all aspects, including price, and that perfectly answers the question: why else?

Seat was one of the last brands to reach the compact SUV segment; a delay that at the time was interpreted as a weakness, but that time has turned into a virtue. Because the Spanish brand, far from inventing anything, what it did was put common sense to everything on the market, to the different alternatives. With this, he managed to condense in a single model the best virtues that customers were looking for. And that has translated into the undoubted commercial success that the Seat Ateca is today, of which more than 100,000 units have already been sold in Spain and close to half a million in the world.

The 1.0 TSI is the version of access to the family of the Seat Ateca

This way of doing things, of offering what people are looking for, without excessive complications, is clearly reflected in this version of access to the range; an alternative that offers simplicity but a lot of sense with its three-cylinder gasoline engine, with its 110 horsepower, with its manual transmission... It is the equivalent in the car of that garment that a person would look for as a 'closet bottom' that would serve any situation, both to be elegant and to appear casual. But always with reason.

So is this Seat Ateca, a model renewed a few years ago but which the years have treated well, especially from the outside - perhaps the interior does show more age, especially in the part of the screens where the Spanish seem to 'have lost step a bit'. It continues to shine due to dimensions that are 'scarce' for what it takes, but which are perfectly adapted to offer maximum habitability and load capacity. And the 4.38 meters in length are undoubtedly an incentive for many customers who flee from large and bulky SUVs. Of course, they do not want to lose habitability and with the Ateca they succeed.

They also get a technological interior, although not up to date, despite the fact that the renewal of the Ateca has brought a retouched instrument panel that, in addition, in the tested version has a highly customizable virtual cockpit. The center of the dashboard is dominated by a 9.2-inch integrated screen that seems small for what is usual, but to which you can connect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without cables. And a point in favor of this Ateca in comparison, for example, with the Seat León is that it has the air conditioner separated from the central screen and can be operated with classic wheels that are easily visible. They should take note of the Lion.

The interior is designed for the maximum enjoyment and comfort of the passengers –better four than five– who have adequate space and seats with fantastic cushioning and support. Also those in the rear seats, also have plenty of head and knee space. And behind them, we have a stupendous 510 liters of boot accessed through a power-opening tailgate on our Style-trimmed test unit.

A more than the solvent engine

Everything, as can be seen, is very logical and reasonable; to avoid complications for the driver. And this is also the case with this entry-level engine, a smooth-running three-cylinder that when cold does denote its odd character, but with 110 horsepower perfectly combines remarkable performance –180 km/h and 0 to 100 in 11, 3 seconds– with an average cost of 6.1 l/100 km, a more than solvent figure for an SUV of its characteristics. All are handled by a manual change that is very pleasant in terms of its use and smoothness. But put to put a hit, having equipped it with an automatic transmission would have already been the icing on the cake.

But it does not disappoint in any case. And both for drivers who use it more on a day-to-day basis in cities or their surroundings as well as for more travelers –although without showing off sports, yes– this Seat Ateca will respond perfectly although you have to know, of course, what we carry and if we are loaded with passengers and luggage, we will have to be patient with the recoveries.

In exchange for these small inconveniences with the Spanish SUV, we will have an all-purpose companion with a more than reasonable price for these times. Like that wardrobe bottom shirt that never fails and with which both at the opera and in any informal meeting we will go perfectly.

The key

With eyes closed, the Seat Ateca is one of those models that could be part of any pool of models to consider. Possibly not the best in its segment at all; but it is at least notable in all sections. And this access version proves it.

Kia Sportage 1.6 T-GDI

The best-selling SUV so far this year is bigger, more powerful, and slightly cheaper. Label C, although there is a Mild Hybrid.

Nissan Qashqai DIG-T

Only Mild Hybrid, four centimeters longer but less trunk. More powerful, but also more expensive than the Seat.

Peugeot 3008 1.2 Puretech

Three-cylinder like the Seat and without electrification. But it's more powerful, more agile, with more boot space, and only slightly more expensive.
