The Audi S6 Avant An Indepth Look at Audis Most Luxurious Station Wagon

Magnificent performance and brilliant consumption are two of the qualities of the 344 hp diesel engine that mounts an entire Audi S6 Avant. It may not seem like the best sports option... until you try it. The rest, the usual: quality, space, comfort, and very good dynamic ways.

Sporty and diesel!

It is curious that the second most sporty version of the A6 range uses a diesel engine, and perhaps it raises some doubt, but it lasts exactly the same time as it takes to check its performance. Without reaching the excellence of the RS6 Avant, the Audi S6 Avant version that concerns us offers a very considerable performance, and without mistreating the pocket too much at the consumption level.

It is a risky bet to think of a high-performance version without having a gasoline block, but we are not talking about an 'any' diesel. It is a powerful 3.0 V6 that combines a turbo with an electric compressor in its power supply, which has the function of seeking maximum performance at low revs, just at the moments in which the turbo does not offer its best face. It is powered by a connected 48V network to 'decorate', in addition, to the ECO environmental label.

Features of the Audi S6 Avant

All this technological conglomerate yields 344 CV and offers 700 Nm of maximum torque. Yes, the response is immediate when stepping on the accelerator and the performance is far from disappointing because it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and reaching 250 km/h (auto-limited) without breaking a sweat. They are figures of merit if we take into account that it measures 4.95 meters in length and weighs 2,095 kilos only with what is on.

However, not all are boasts in this model of the German brand. Diesel also has its less attractive notes. It's a sporty S6 Avant, but cold and idling don't sound pretty and vibrate excessively. Another point that does not play in its favor is its low rev range. Here there is no way to stretch to infinity. He has a good time and pushes hard up to 4,000 laps. Spot. There is no more room to stretch. Those are two reasons that gasoline advocates will use judiciously if they wish.

It is true that if we force it caresses 5,000 rpm, but it does not compensate because it hardly contributes anything and we will only add extra suffering to the engine. In addition, the 8-speed Tiptronic will shift up without warning because it always tends to protect the engine from an 'absurd' over-rev.

The automatic transmission uses a torque converter. Upshifting is more convincing than downshifting in its sequential function, available both on the lever and on the cams that rotate together with the movement of the steering wheel. It also includes a sports program.

Dynamics of the Audi S6 Avant

The standard progressive steering is quite direct (barely 2.25 turns of the steering wheel between locks) and the quattro all-wheel drive system ensures perfect traction. A central self-locking differential distributes the torque according to needs. It starts with a 60/40 distribution but can send up to 70 in front or 85 in the rear depending on the driving profile chosen.

The chassis is supported by two multi-link schemes on both axes, but the S6 Avant TDI mounts a firmer suspension lowered by 20 millimeters compared to other versions. The shock absorbers have electronic regulation as standard, and as an option, you can enjoy a pneumatic suspension that costs 1,170 euros in the options menu. Dynamic details are also offered, such as a sports differential (2,020 euros) or a four-wheel steering system (2,555 euros).

Autonomy of the Audi S6 Avant

Running the A6 Avant TDI is completely 'bipolar'. On the one hand, it is a high-performance vehicle, which enjoys formidable performance and magnificent dynamic qualities. On the other, it offers a consumption that during the test has been 7.4 liters on average (approves 7.2 liters per 100 kilometers). That gives us autonomy that caresses the 1,000 km! Of course, in more sporty driving it is difficult to drop below 9.0 liters.

Depending on our state of mind, and the layout, of course, the driving assistant allows us to choose between the Efficiency, Comfort, Auto, Dynamic and Individual profiles, which allow us to vary the configurations of the propulsion, the running gear, the steering or the sound of the engine, among others.

Whatever the option, the S6 Avant TDI is a pool of oil due to its reactions in motion and does not convey the sensation of driving a vehicle of its dimensions and weight when cornering. The comfort is of a drawer, but it loses some points due to the suspension and the low profile of the 255/35 R21 tires that our unit mounts (the standard wheels are 20 inches).

Interior of the Audi S6 Avant

The interior of the Audi S6 Avant TDI is forceful for its quality and the space it provides. Everything is taken care of in detail, the materials, the settings... and is surrounded by a sportier atmosphere, reflected in the front seats, the metal pedals or a 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus frame that offers settings and information in more detail. towards high performance.

The dual touch screen on the dashboard offers a high resolution and is packed with all sorts of functions. The controls are haptic, but their location is somewhat low.

Behind the habitability it offers is very generous in three dimensions. Even the central plaza would be very usable if it weren't for the voluminous central tunnel. Nothing to object to the trunk, huge, diaphanous, clean, and well-finished. The large electric gate leads to a 'cave' that offers between 550 and 1,660 liters.

Safety and price of the Audi S6 Avant

Too bad that the standard equipment has some gaps for a vehicle that costs 95,880 euros. In any case, it offers emergency braking Audi pre sense front, Audi parking system plus, cruise control, a speed limiter, an alert for an involuntary lane change, a rearview camera, Audi drive select driving modes selector, FULL headlights LED Matrix HD, sports suspension with damper control…

It adds speed limit assistant to its standard equipment, progressive steering, ramp start assistant, electro-chromatic interior mirror, 4-zone climate control, electric opening and closing of the trunk, virtual cockpit plus box, browser, Audi connects infotainment (3 years), Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, 20-inch alloy wheels and sporty front seats.

The options menu allows us to complete the vehicle with hardly any limits. So we can add elements such as a lane-keeping assistant and signal recognition (725 euros), a night vision system (2,895 euros), Head-up Display (1,885 euros), the Tour Assistance Package, which includes driving assistant adaptive, adaptive cruise control with Traffic Jam Assist, lane keeping, emergency assistant, predictive efficiency, dodging, turning and pre sense front plus, all for 2,690 euros), the Audi phone box (675 euros) or the Audi park assist for 630 euros.

In short, Audi S6 Avant has good habitability, an excellent boot, and great quality... It may surprise you that an S6 uses a diesel, but I assure you that this engine has many more virtues than defects.
